FAQs

How are you different to other gyms?

We offer a premium service to an exclusive membership. Our class sizes are small (10-12) so you receive as much 1-2-1 coaching in a small group as possible. This allows you to develop your skills quicker and with better form ultimately leading to continued progressions in your training. There will always be a coach available for you to seek advice from either during a session or in open gym. This is not the case in most commercial gyms where you can struggle to find fitness staff!

I’ve heard CrossFit can be dangerous

Lifting weights can be dangerous if done with incorrect form or with weights that are too heavy for your current ability and level of fitness. At CrossFit Cheddar Rising we will teach you how to perform the movements safely and effectively and strongly encourage athletes to keep the loads at a level where you can perform the movements well. Some degree of breakdown in form will happen as you push your limits, but our coaches will help you find a safe balance between form and intensity to allow you to progress safely.

Am I too old/out of shape/inexperienced?

No! Our members come in all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities. All workouts can be scaled to be challenging for each individual athlete. You are encouraged to work at an intensity that challenges you. Our coaches will help you scale the workout to achieve the appropriate stimulus.

I’ve never lifted weights before. Will I be able to join in?

Yes, but you will need to take our Foundations course to teach you how to perform the fundamental CrossFit movements safely and effectively. You should then use lighter weights initially, focusing on form and developing your technique, and work at an appropriate intensity.  This will help prevent injuries and ensure you have a long and happy future as a CrossFit athlete.

Can I just rock up and pay on the day?

Unfortunately not- all our classes need to be pre-booked via our WodBoard booking system, where a variety of options from single class payments to monthly memberships are available.

To take part in regular CrossFit classes involving barbell work, gymnastics and complex movements you will need to complete our Foundations programme.

Can I try before I commit?

If you have never done CrossFit before you can pay for a single session and try one of our lunchtime MetCon, Saturday Team WODs or Sunday Conditioning WODs  – these are either metabolic conditioning-biased sessions which do not require a membership or knowledge of specialist movements, or can be scaled e.g. to substitute skilled barbell movements with a more suitable exercise. If you enjoy this and book in a Foundations course, we will deduct the cost of the class from the fee. E-mail us at info@crossfitcheddarrising.com to discuss this further.

What if I am injured?

All workouts can be scaled or exercise substitutions made if you have an existing injury that you are able to work around. Just let our coaches know before the session and we can help you find an appropriate alternative. The assault bike is always an option if you can’t run!

What does RX mean?

This means completing the workout as prescribed. Often the weights suggested are what the elite athletes use and will not be appropriate for many of our CrossFit affiliate athletes. At CrossFit Cheddar Rising we focus on the stimulus of the exercise and prescribe weight that will allow you to experience the correct intensity related to your ability.

I’m visiting the area but am an experienced CrossFitter - can I come and take part in normal classes?

Absolutely!  You will need to use our WodBoard booking system and fill in the health and contact forms. It is worth ringing us or dropping us an email at info@crossfitcheddarrising.com before you come.

Parking

We have limited parking available on site (11 spaces between 9am and 5pm; 13 spaces outside of these times). Please make every effort to limit your car use and use sustainable means of transport such as car sharing or cycling. Cycle racks are available directly outside the front of Stanley House. We must be careful not to exacerbate the existing parking problems on Cheddar Business Park, so please do not park around the entrance to the Business Park or block other business’s entrances
